in front ofの使い方
1. …のすぐ前に, の正面に
- Please stand in front of the blackboard for the photo.
(写真撮影のため, 黒板のすぐ前に立ってください)
in front of は「…のすぐ前に」や「…の正面に（の, で）」の意味で使われます。
in front of は「<語句の> 左側に」の意味で使われることもあります。
- He is entitled to put ‘Dr.’ in front of his name.
(彼には名前の左側に『博士』と付ける権利があります)
上述のように、in front ot は「…の正面の」の意味で使われます。
- The car is parked in front of the house.
(車は家の前に駐車されています)
この例文では、車は家の前（正面）に止まっていると述べられています。
一方、in the front of は「…の最前部の」の意味で使われます。次の英文を見てみましょう。
- She sat in the front of the classroom.
(彼女は教室の前方に座っていました)
ここでは、彼女が座っていたのは、教室の前方（in the front of）になります。教室の外に座っていたわけではない点に注意しましょう。
英語の in front of（…の正面の）は、通りなどを隔てた向こう側のような、距離のある位置に使用することはできません。
そのため、通りを隔てて向かい合うものを指す場合、across（…の向かい側に）や opppsite（…の向かい側の）を使うようにしましょう。
- The bank is across the street from the City Hall.
(銀行は通りを隔てて市役所の向かい側にあります)
- I prefer to sit in front of the window to enjoy the view.
(眺めを楽しむため, 窓のすぐ前に座りたいです) - The bus will stop in front of the library.
(バスは図書館の正面に止まるでしょう) - There is a bus stop in front of the school.

2. …の前方を, …の先に立って
- He always likes to walk in front of the group during hikes.
(彼はハイキングの間, いつも集団に先立って歩くのが好きです)
in front of は「…の前方を, …の先に立って」の意味で使われることもあります。
- Cars need to stop until the runners pass in front of the road during the marathon.
(マラソン中, 車はランナーが道路の前を通過するまで止まる必要があります)
3. <建物の> 入り口の外で, 表で
- Please wait in front of the restaurant until your table is ready.
(テーブルの準備ができるまで, レストランの外でお待ちください) - There was a small outdoor bench in front of the house.
(家の外に小さな屋外ベンチがあった)
in front of は「<建物の> 入り口の外で, 表で」の意味で使われることもあります。
- It’s important not to park in front of the entrance to the garage.
(ガレージの入り口の外に駐車しないことが重要だ)
注: Collins Cobuild English Usage（4th）では、この意味の in front of を “If you are between the front of a building and the street, you say that you are “in front of” the building.” と説明しています。
4. …の面前で, …がいる所で
- The debate took place in front of a large audience.
(討論会は大勢の聴衆の前で行われました) - Please be mindful of your language in front of the children.
(子どもたちのいる所では言葉遣いに気をつけてください)
in front of は「…がいる所で, …の面前で」の意味で使われることもあります。
be brought in front of は「（悪いことをして）…の前に呼び出される」の意味で用いられます。
- The accused will be brought in front of the judge for the trial.
(被告人は裁判のため, 裁判官の前に呼び出されるでしょう)
- The band performed in front of a large crowd at the music festival.
(そのバンドは音楽祭で, 大勢の観衆の前で演奏しました) - The student demonstrated the experiment in front of the whole class.
(その生徒はクラス全員の前で実験を実演しました) - The children performed a play in front of the parents at the school play.

5. …と向き合って
- She spends most of her workday in front of a computer.
(彼女は仕事の日の大半をコンピュータと向かい合って過ごします) - They danced together in front of the mirror.

in front of は「…と向き合って」の意味で使われることもあります。
- They gathered in front of the television to watch the breaking news.

6. …の前途に
- Graduating high school means you have your whole life in front of you.
(高校を卒業するということは, あなたの前途に人生があるということです)
in front of は「…の前途に」の意味で使われることもあります。
この意味の in front of は <時間> をあらわします。そのため、ahead of（…より前に）や before（…より前に）で言い換えることができます。
- Starting a new job can be exciting, knowing you have your whole life in front of you.
