notwithstanding は「…にもかかわらず」を意味する前置詞です。類義語の despite や in spite of より意味は弱いものの、格式張った言い方に聞こえます。副詞としての用法もあります。

- Notwithstanding the rain, we still went for a walk in the park.
(雨にもかかわらず, 公園を散歩しました) - We arrived at the airport on time for our flight, notwithstanding the traffic.
(渋滞にもかかわらず, フライトの時間通りに空港に到着しました) - The bad weather notwithstanding, we decided to go ahead with our camping trip.

notwithstanding は「…にもかかわらず」の意味で、前置詞として使われます。例文（上）は文頭、例文（中）は文末に用いられている場合です。例文（下）のように、名詞（句）の後ろに置かれることもあります。
notwithstanding は分詞構文に由来する前置詞です。名詞の後に置かれる用法は、その名残りと言って良いでしょう。

notwithstanding は「それにもかかわらず」の意味で、副詞としての用法もあります。例文（上）のように文頭に置かれる場合と、例文（下）のように、文末に置かれる場合があります。

…であるにもかかわらず
- Notwithstanding (that) she had never been to Japan before, she managed to navigate the Tokyo subway system with ease. (日本に来たことがないにもかかわらず、彼女は東京の地下鉄を難なく乗りこなすことができた)
notwithstanding は「…であるにもかかわらず」の意味で、接続詞として使われることもあります。この場合、直後にしばしば、that を伴います。
いくつかの英語辞書は、接続詞としての notwithstanding を古風、または非標準的な表現としています。また、接続詞用法を掲載していない辞書もあります。
notwithstanding と despite, in spite of の違い
- They started notwithstanding the bad weather.
(悪天候にもかかわらず出発した) - They carried out their plan despite the opposition.
(彼らは反対があるにもかかわらずその計画を実行した) - He persevered in spite of their criticism.
(彼らの批判にもかかわらず頑張った)

notwithstanding, despite, in spite of は似た意味を持ちますが、ニュアンスが少々異なります。notwithstanding は何かの障害（妨害）があるなか、それを実施するというニュアンスを持ちます。ただし、despite や in spite of より意味は弱く、単にその障害が存在するだけ、といった様子をあらわします。
