unlessの使い方
1. …でない限り; もし…でなければ
- He won’t buy the car unless the price is reduced.
(値下げされない限り, 彼は車を買わないでしょう)
unless は「…でない限り」（except if）の意味で使われる接続詞（従属接続詞）です。「もし…でなければ」（if … not）の意味で用いられることもあります。
unlessに導かれる節を「従属節」、そうでない節を「主節」と呼びます。例文であれば、unless the price is reduced（値下げされない限り）が従属節、He won’t buy the car（彼は車を買わないでしょう）が主節です。
はい、unlessは文頭でも使用できます。文頭においても「…でない限り」の意味で用いられます。
- Unless you finish your homework, you can’t play video games.
(宿題が終わらない限り, ビデオゲームはできません)
unless節の内容が未来をあらわしている場合でも、通例、現在時制を使用します。
- We won’t have a white Christmas unless it snows.
(雪が降らない限り, ホワイトクリスマスにはなりません)
→「雪が降る」は未来の出来事ですが、unless節内につき、現在形（snows）が用いられています。
主に英会話では、Not unless（…だったら話は別ですが）の形で用いられることがあります。これは、not を用いることで、前文の内容を打ち消す効果があります。
- A: “Are you going to the party tomorrow?”
(「明日, パーティーには行きますか」)
B: “Not unless there’s free food.”
(「タダ飯でもない限りね」)
→ Bの返答には「タダ飯でもない限り行きません（= 無料の食事があるなら話は別ですが）」といったニュアンスがあります。
unless節内において、主語とbe動詞はしばしば、省略されます。
- Students should not submit their assignments early unless instructed to do so.
(学生は指示がない限り, 課題の早期提出をしてはなりません)
→ unless they (=students) are instructed to do so より、they are を省略した形です。
unless otherwise の形で用いられることもあります。
- Unless otherwise stated, all sales are final and non-refundable.
(特に明記されていない限り, すべての販売は最終的なものであり, 返金できません)
「もっとも…だったら話は別だが」の意味で、主節の後、追加的に用いられることがあります。
- The car ran smoothly ― unless you tried to start it on a cold morning.
(その車はズムーズに動きます, もっとも朝にエンジンをかけようとしたら話は別ですけれどね)
- Unless it’s raining, we’ll have the picnic in the park.
(雨が降らない限り, 公園でピクニックをします) - We’ll continue the hike unless there’s a sudden thunderstorm.
(突然の雷雨でもない限り, ハイキングは続けます) - Please don’t sign the contract unless you are certain about its terms.
(契約内容に確信が持てない限り, 契約書にサインしないでください) - We’ll arrive on time unless something unexpected happens.
(予期せぬことが起こらない限り, 時間通りに到着します) - He’ll buy the car if it’s in good condition, unless the price is too high.

unlessは長文の中に出現することもあります。
- We can proceed with the project as planned, making adjustments along the way if necessary, unless unforeseen circumstances arise that require us to reassess our timeline.
(不測の事態が発生してスケジュールを見直す必要が生じない限り, 必要であれば途中で調整しながら, 計画通りにプロジェクトを進めることができます)
unlessとif notの使い分け方
1. unless と if not を交換できる場合
- I’ll take the job unless the pay is too low.
(= I’ll take the job if the pay isn’t too low.)
(給料が低すぎない限り, その仕事を引き受けますよ)
unless（…でない限り）は if not 、多くの場合、交換して使用できます。
「給料が低すぎない限り, その仕事を引き受けます」は、「もし低すぎる場合でなければ, その仕事を引き受けます」と同義です。
2. unless と if not を交換できない場合
- I’ll be surprised if we don’t get a lot of snow this winter.
I’ll be surprised unless we get a lot of snow this winter.
(この冬, 雪が積もらなかったら驚くでしょうね)
通例、感情をあらわす語が主節で用いられている場合、if not と unless は交換できません。
例文では、感情をあらわす語として surprised が用いられています。他にも、主節に be amazed, angry, glad, pleased などがある場合、unless には書き換えできません。
意味の面から、unless と if not が同義でない（= したがって交換できない）場合があります。
例を見てみましょう。
- If my train isn’t late it will be the first time this week.
Unless my train’s late it will be the first time this week.
(もし電車が遅れなければ, それは今週初めてのことです)
この英文では、if節は「もし電車が遅れなければ」の意味で使われており、「電車が遅れない限り（eexept if）」の意味ではありません。よって、Unless節を使った書き換えは不可となります。
unless節には肯定の前提があるため、仮定法（= 事実と異なることを述べる）とは相性が合いません。そのため、unless節では通例、仮定法は用いられません。
- If I had not arrived, we would have missed the opportunity to catch the last train home.
