on top of は「…の上に」の意味で使われる郡前置詞です。on を単体で使用する場合に比べて、強調的な言い方になります。「…に加えて」のような派生的な意味でも使われます。

on top of の使い方
1. …の上に
- The cat is sleeping on top of the blanket.
(猫は毛布の上で寝ています)
on top of は「…の上に」の意味で使われます。on（…の上に）を強調した表現と言っても良いでしょう。
くだけたアメリカ英語では、of を省略することがあります。
例: The cat is sleeping on top the blanket.（猫は毛布の上で寝ています）
- Place the vase on top of the wooden table, please.
(花瓶を木のテーブルの上に置いてください) - The keys were found on top of the bookshelf.
(鍵は本棚の上に見つかりました) - The trophy sits proudly on top of the display cabinet.
(トロフィーは飾り棚の上に誇らしげに置かれています)
2. …に加えて
- I forgot my umbrella at home, and on top of that, it started raining during my walk.
- (傘を家に忘れました, その上, 散歩の途中で雨が降ってきました)
- James received a bonus on top of his salary.
(ジェームズは給料に加えてボーナスを受け取った)
on top of は「…に加えて」の意味で使われることもあります。例文（上）のように、どちらかと言うと、悪い内容の状況を言う時によく使われます。ただ、例文（下）のように、良い内容の時にも使用できます。
on top of everything else（おまけに, ほかの何よりも）の形で使うこともあります。
例: Sarah was running late for an important meeting, and on top of everything else, she realized she forgot her laptop at home.（サラは大事な会議で遅刻した上, ノートパソコンを家に忘れたことに気づいた）
注: Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (6th) では、”if something bad happens to you on top of something else, it happens when you have other problems” と定義した上で、悪い内容の例文を掲載しています。一方、オックスフォード現代英英辞典（第10版）では、”in addition to something” と定義した上で、悪い内容の例文だけでなく、良い内容の例文も載せています。
3. …をうまくさばいて; …に通じて
- The police got on top of the situation.
(警察が状況をうまくさばきました) - It’s important to try to keep on top of market trends.
(市場の動向によく通じていることが重要です)
on top of は「…をうまくさばいて」や「…に通じて」の意味で使われることもあります。
- When the fire alarm rang, the well-trained employees got on top of the situation and efficiently guided everyone to the nearest exits.
(火災報知器が鳴ると, よく訓練された従業員が状況を把握し, 全員を近くの出口に効率よく誘導した) - Even though it was his first day, Mark was on top of work within a few hours.

4. <危険などが> …のすぐそばに迫って; …のすぐ後に
- The car was almost on top of us.
(あの車が私たちのすぐそばに迫っていた) - On top of the earthquake, fires unexpectedly broke out.

on top of は「…のすぐそばに迫って」や「…のすぐ後に」の意味で使われることもあります。これらは通例、危険などが差し迫った状況に対して用います。
5. …に寄せ合わさって
- We’re living on top of each other in that tiny apartment.
(私たちはあの小さなアパートで肩寄せ合って暮らしていた)
on top of は「…に寄せ合わさって」の意味で使われることもあります。

1. on top of the world
- After receiving the promotion, Sarah felt on top of the world.
(昇進の後, サラは世界の頂点に立った気分になった)
on top of the world は「有頂天になって」の意味で使われます。
2. one on top of the other
- The books were stacked one on top of the other.
(本は1冊ずつ積み重ねられていました) - The books were piled on top of one another.
(本は1冊ずつ積み重ねられていました)
one on top of the other は「積み重ねて」の意味で使われます。one on top of the other = on top of one another のように言い換えることもできます。
3. get on top of
- The pilot got on top of the situation.
(パイロットはその状況をうまくさばきました) - Things are starting to get on top of her.
(事態は彼女に追い打ちをかけ始めています)
get on top of は、例文（上）のように「<人が> …をうまく処理する」の意味と、例文（下）のように「<事が> <人を> 悩ませる」の意味があります。
