worthwhile の意味・使い方

1. (a/an) worthwhile O

It’s a worthwhile job.
(それはやりがいのある仕事です)
These are worthwhile goals.

worthwhile は「価値のある」や「役立つ」の意味で名詞の前に使われます。something の場合、語の後ろに置かれます。

2. S be worthwhile

We’ve found that our effort has been worthwhile.
(努力した価値があったと思います)

“S be worthwhile” は「…の価値がある」の意味で使われます。この場合、it などの代名詞以外の主語が用いられます。

この用法において、worthwhile の後に to do や doing を続けることは不可とされます。
例えば、☓The book is worthwhile examining. のように言うことはできません。
