『英語語義語源辞典』によれば、beside は古英語 bi sidan（= by side）を語源としています。
besideの使い方
1. …のそばに(の), …の隣に(の), …の横に(の)
- She sat beside me during the movie.
(彼女は映画の間, 私のそばに座っていました) - The store is beside the café.
(お店はカフェの隣にあります)
beside は「…のそばに（の）」、「…の隣に（の）」、「…の横に（の）」の意味で使われます。
「…と並んで」の意味で用いられることもあります。
- They walked beside each other.
(彼らは並んで歩いていました)
「『そば』と『隣』は厳密には違うのではないか」と思われる方もいるかも知れません。
そこで、beside について英英辞典で調べてみると、次のような定義があります。
Something that is beside something else is at the side of it or next to it.

上記の定義によれば、beside は “at the side of it”（それの側にある）、もしくは “next to it”（その横にある）ことをあらわす際に用いるようです。
beside を含む文を訳す際、「そば」と「隣」は文脈によって分けると良いでしょう。
beside（…のそばに, 隣に）と形がよく似た単語に besides（…に加えて）があります。両者は意味が異なるため、使い分けに注意が必要です。
- She sat beside her sister in the car.

(あなたに加えて誰がいましたか)
- She ran beside her friend in the park.
(彼女は公園で友人と並んで走っていました) - The statue stood beside the fountain in the town square.

2. …と比べると
- She looked very good beside her friends.
(彼女は友人たちと比べるととても良い表情をしていました)
beside は「…と比べると」の意味で用いられることもあります。
「…と同等の」の意味で用いられることもあります。
- She ranked beside her teammates in the relay race.
(彼女はリレーでチームメイトに並ぶ力を持っていました)
- The tree seemed small beside the towering skyscraper.
(そびえ立つ高層ビルに比べれば, その木は小さく見えました)
3. …を外れて, 無関係で
- Your opinion on the movie is beside the point.
(映画に関するあなたの意見は的外れです)
beside は「…を外れて」や「無関係で」の意味で使われることがあります。
beside the point（的外れで）/ beside the mark（的外れで – 古風） / beside the question（論点を外れて）
- Whether it’s raining or not is beside the point.
(雨が降っているかどうかは無関係です) - Her comments about the menu are beside the mark.
(メニューに関する彼女のコメントは的外れです) - The discussion about the budget is beside the question.

be beside oneself は「<喜び･怒り･不安などで> 我を忘れて, 有頂天になって」の意味で使われるイディオムです
