『英語語義語源辞典』によると、near は “nigh” という単語の古英語 nēar の比較級を語源としています。
nearの使い方（前置詞用法）
1. [位置] …の近くに
- I live near a big shopping mall.
(大きなショッピングモールの近くに住んでいます) - There’s a park near my house.
(家の近くに公園があります)
near は「…の近くに」の意味で <位置> をあらわします。
例文（上）は「動詞+near」、例文（下）は「名詞+near」の例です。
somewhere near O（Oの近くのどこか）の形で使われることがあります。
- I lost my keys somewhere near the grocery store.
(スーパーマーケットの近くのどこかに鍵を落としてしまいました)
「（移動しながら）…に接近して」の意味で使われることがあります。
- The cat always comes near when I’m eating.
(私が食事している時, 猫はいつも近くに来てくれます)
前述のように、near は古英語 nēar の比較級が語源です。そのため、前置詞用法であっても、nearer のような比較級や nearest のような最上級にて使用できると言われます。
- Can you be nearer the microphone?
(マイクに近づいていただけますか) - Please sit nearest the window so you can enjoy the view.
(景色を楽しめるよう, 窓際の席にお座りください)
尚、『現代英文法講義』のように、near を「目的語を取る形容詞」と考え、前置詞の比較変化を認めない立場もあります。
前置詞 near は very などの程度副詞による修飾が可能です。
- He stood very near her during the presentation to help with the slides.
(彼はプレゼンテーションの間, 彼女の近くに立ってスライドを手伝っていました)
- He usually sits near the TV.
(彼は普段テレビの近くに座ります) - Please stay near the entrance.
(入口の近くにいてください) - She used to work near a library.

- It was near noon when the meeting finally started.

near は「…の近くに」や「間近に」の意味で <時間> をあらわすことがあります。
- The train arrived nearer eight than seven o’clock.
(電車は7時よりも8時に近い時間に到着しました) - The schedule may change nearer the time.
(予定はその時間が近づくと変更されるかもしれません) - The weather improved nearer the end of the day.
(天気は日が暮れる頃に良くなりました) - The sun is at its highest near midday.

3. [数量表現] …に近い, ほぼ…, だいたい…
- The ticket for the event is near 5,000 yen.
(そのイベントのチケットはだいたい5,000円です)
near は「…に近い」, 「ほぼ…」, 「だいたい…」の意味で使われることがあります。この場合、数量表現の前に使われます。
- The final score was near 90 in the game.
(試合の最終スコアは90に近かったです) - The accuracy of the data is near 100%.
(データの正確さはほぼ100%です) - The temperature today is near its record high of 40°C.
(今日の気温は記録的な40°Cに近いです) - The stock price is near the highest level in its history.

4. [状態] …に近い, しそうである
- The kitchen renovation is near completion.
(台所の改装は完成間近です)
near は「…に近い」や「…しそうである」の意味で <状態> をあらわすことがあります。
「ほとんど…しかけて」の意味で使われることがあります。
- She was near tears after hearing the sad news.
(悲しい知らせを聞いて, 彼女は涙が出そうになりました)
“be no nearer O than …” の形で用いられる場合があります。
- We are no nearer agreement than we were last week.
(私たちは先週に比べて合意に近づいていません)
- The restaurant is near bankruptcy due to declining sales.
(そのレストランは売上の減少により破産寸前です) - Children near happiness are often more playful.

- The copy of the painting in the gallery is nearest the original.

near は「…に似て」や「…に匹敵する」の意味で <類似> をあらわすことがあります。
- This dress is nearer a size 8 than a size 6.
(このドレスはサイズ6よりもサイズ8に近いです) - His story was near enough the truth for the police to accept it.

“not … come near O” は「<品質・能力などで> Oには及ばない」の意味で使われるイディオムです。
否定文、または否定を意味する語（nobody, none など）と共に用いられます。

(彼は廃墟の建物に近づくのを拒否しました)
“not go near O” は「…に近づかない」の意味で使われるイディオムです。
通例、否定文で使われます。例文（下）の refuse のように、否定を含意する語の後に使われることもあります。
nearの使い方（副詞用法）
1. [位置] (…の) 近くに, 接近して
- The rain came nearer.
(雨が近づいてきました)
副詞 near は「（…の）近くに」や「接近して」の意味で <位置> をあらわします。
“as near to O as S could” の形で使われる場合があります。
- She parked the car as near to the entrance as she could.
(彼女はできるだけ入口に近くに車を駐車しました)
near to のように to を伴うことがあります。これは nearer のような比較級、または nearest のような最上級の場合です。
- As the party started, guests came nearer to the dance floor.
(パーティーが始まると, ゲストたちはダンスフロアに近づきました) - During the family dinner, he always sits nearest to his mother.
(家族の夕食の際, 彼はいつも母親の最も近くに座ります)
- The storm clouds began to draw near.
(嵐の雲が近づき始めました) - The fireworks exploded somewhere near.

副詞 near は「近く（に）」や「近い将来」の意味で <時間> をあらわします。

3. もう少しでAするところだ
- She was near to tears.

副詞 near は「もう少しでAするところだ」の意味で使われることがあります。
be near to doing のように、動名詞が続くことがあります。
- He was near to falling asleep during the lecture.
(彼は講義中に眠りそうになっていました)
be動詞の代わりに come を使うこともあります。
- He came near to exhaustion after running the marathon.
(彼はマラソンを走った後, もう少しで疲労困憊するところだった)
nearest が名詞的に使われて、関係詞節の先行詞として使われることがあります。
- That was the nearest we got to solving the mystery.

- The building is near to completion.
(その建物はもう少しで完成するところです) - He is no nearer to understanding the complex instructions.

4. ほとんど, だいたい
- Her presentation was a near-perfect example of clear communication.

副詞 near は「ほとんど」や「だいたい」の意味で使われることがあります。
通例、複合語で用いられます。
この意味の near を単独で用いるのは <古風> な響きがあります。
- It near broke her heart.

ただし、very と共に使われると、容認度が上がります。
- It very near broke her heart.
(そのために彼女の胸は今にも張り裂けんばかりでした)

「もう少しで」などの意味で、数量の前で使われる場合があります。
- The temperature will be near 25 degrees by noon.
(温度は正午までに25度になるでしょう)
- The film was a near-true portrayal of the historical events.
(その映画は歴史的な出来事をほぼ忠実に描いていました) - Climbing that mountain in such weather is a near impossible task.
(そんな天候の中, あの山に登るのは不可能に近い)
5. 近く, 接近して, 親密に
- We came up with two near-related ideas for decorating the living room.
(私たちはリビングルームを装飾するための2つの関連したアイデアを思いつきました)
副詞 near は「近く」,「接近して」, 「親密に」などの意味で使われることがあります。

- The new car will cost $10,000, or as near as dammit.

as near as dammit は「<量・金額などが> ほぼそれに近い」の意味で使われるイディオムです。
「もうちょっとで（…するところで）」の意味で使われることがあります。
- You were as near as dammit to missing your flight.
(君はもうちょっとで飛行機に乗り遅れるところだったよ)
- The trip will take about an hour, as near as he can guess.
(彼が推測できる限り, その旅行には約1時間かかるでしょう)
as near as S can guess は「察し得る限りでは」の意味で使われるイディオムです。
as near as S can judge/tell の形で使われることもあります。
- The meeting will last about an hour, as near as I can judge.
(私の判断できる限り, 会議は約1時間続くでしょう) - The new sofa costs $1,200, as near as she can tell.
(彼女が判断できる限り, その新しいソファは1,200ドルです)
- People came from near and far to attend the festival.
(人々はあちこちからフェスティバルに参加するために来ました)
near and far は「あちこちに（を）」の意味で使われるイディオムです。
- It’s ten o’clock, near enough.
(もうすぐ10時です) - The restaurant can accommodate 50 guests, or near enough.
(そのレストランは50人のゲストを収容できる, ほぼそれに近いです)
near enough は「ほとんど」や「…も同然」の意味で使われるイディオムです。or near enough の形で使われることもあります。
near enough と同じ意味で, as near as makes no difference の形で使われることがあります。
- The event will start at 3 PM, as near as makes no difference.
(イベントは午後3時かそこらではじまります)
- Her explanation was nowhere near satisfactory.
(彼女の説明はとても満足のいくものではありませんでした)
nowhere near は「とても…ではない」の意味で使われるイディオムです。
nowhere near as X as（とてもXではない）の形で使われることもあります。
- The new phone is nowhere near as advanced as the latest model.
(その新しい電話機は最新モデルほど先進的ではありません)
nearの使い方（形容詞用法）
1. [位置] (…に) 近い, 接近した
- The restaurant is very near.
(そのレストランはとても近いです)
形容詞 near は「（…に）近い」, 「接近した」の意味で [位置] をあらわします。
例文は叙述用法（= be動詞の後）で用いられている例です。通例、very や quite のような修飾語を伴います。
「近くの◯◯」を言う場合、near ではなく nearby を使います。
a near café- a nearby café（近くのカフェ）
尚、「近いほうの」の意味であれば、near を使用できます。
- the near road（近道）
“the nearest A” のように最上級であれば、near を名詞の前に用いることができます。
- The nearest beach is just a short drive away.
(最寄りのビーチは車ですぐの距離にあります)
somewhere/anywhere near の形で用いられることもあります。
- Is there a good restaurant anywhere near?
(近くに良いレストランはありますか)
the nearer of の形で使われる場合があります。
- The nearer of the two bus stops is less crowded.
(2つのバス停のうち, 近い方はあまり混んでいません)
英作文の際、「…に近い」という日本語の語感から、near from … と書いてしまうことがありますが、これは誤りです。この意味では neat to と言うようにしましょう。
The restaurant is near from the beach.- The restaurant is near to the beach.
(レストランは海岸の近くにあります)
2. [時間] 近い, 近い将来の
- The end of the movie is getting near.
(映画の終わりが近づいてきています)
形容詞 near は「近い」や「近い将来の」の意味で [時間] をあらわします。
in the near future（近い将来に）の形で使われることがあります。
- We might buy a new car in the near future.
(近い将来, 新しい車を買うかもしれません)
“near at hand” は「近い将来に」の意味で使われるイディオムです。
- Your promotion is near at hand.
(あなたの昇進が間近に迫っています)
“be near upon O” は「…に近い」の意味で使われます。
- It was near upon sunset when we reached the beach.
(私たちがビーチに到着したときには, ほとんど日が沈みかけていました)
尚、この用法では、厳密にはその時間に達していない点に注意が必要です。
上記の例文なら、日没近くになっていたものの、完全に日が暮れていたわけではありません。
3. …も同然の, かろうじて
- Yesterday’s fire at the warehouse was a near disaster.
(昨日の倉庫での火事は, 危機一髪のところでした)
形容詞 near は「…も同然の」や「かろうじて」の意味で使われることがあります。
“near-A” の形で、ハイフンで一語に綴ることがあります。
- The child was rescued after a near-drowning at the pool.
(その子供はプールで溺れかけた後, 救助されました)
この意味の near は、比較級・最上級で使われません。
- The hikers had a near escape from the falling rock.
(ハイカーたちは, 落ちてきた岩からかろうじて逃れました) - The car crash in the tunnel was a near tragedy for the family.
(トンネル内での車の衝突は, その家族にとって間一髪の悲劇でした) - The baby’s recovery after the surgery was a near miracle.
(手術後の赤ちゃんの回復は, ほとんど奇跡的でした) - Her promotion at the end of the year is a near certainty.

4. 良く似た, 本物に近い
- Her thoughts were near to mine.
(彼女の考えは私のものに近いものでした) - The twins had a near resemblance to each other.
(双子たちはお互いに非常に似ていました)
形容詞 near は「良く似た」や「本物に近い」の意味で使われることがあります。
例文（上）は叙述用法（= be動詞の後）、例文（下）は限定用法（= 名詞の前）で用いられている例です。
be the nearest thing to（…というのに最も近いもの(人)である）の形で使われることがあります。
- He was the nearest thing to a hero that the town had ever seen.
(彼は町が今まで見た中で最も近いヒーローでした)
「<状況> …に近い」の意味で使われる場合があります。
- She was near to thinking of a solution for the problem.
(彼女は問題の解決策を考えているところでした)
- The document provided a near translation of the original text.
(その文書は原文の直訳を提供していました) - The new design was nearer to the client’s vision than the previous drafts.
(新しいデザインは以前の原稿よりも顧客のビジョンに近かったです) - The restaurant offered a variety of near beer options for those avoiding alcohol.

5. <血縁関係が> 近い
- A near relative of mine is coming to visit next week.
(私の親戚が来週訪ねてきます)
形容詞 near は「<血縁関係が> 近い」の意味で使われることがあります。
「<ライバルなどが> もっとも手強い」の意味で使われることがあります。
- His nearest rival is just a few points behind.

「すぐ次に来る」の意味で使われることがあります。
- The nearest runner to the finish line was just meters away.
(ゴールラインに最も近いランナーはほんの数メートル先にいました)
near and dear（親密な）の形で使われることがあります。
- His dog was a near and dear companion throughout his life.
(彼の犬は生涯を通じてとても大切な伴侶でした)
最上級で用いられることもあります。
- She spent the holidays with her nearest and dearest.
(彼女はもっとも親しい人たちと休暇を過ごしました)
- She surpassed her nearest competitor in the final round.
(彼女は決勝戦で手ごわい競争相手を超えました)
6. 近いほうの, こちら側の
- The near side of the mountain was covered in snow.
(山のこちら側は雪で覆われていました)
形容詞 near は「近いほうの」や「こちら側の」の意味で使われることがあります。
「<車などの> 左側」の意味で使われることがあります。
- The near front wheel was damaged after hitting the curb.
(左側の前輪は縁石にぶつかって損傷しました)
もともと、馬に乗る際、通例左側から乗る（= 左側が近い）ことから、この用法が使われるようになりました。主にイギリス英語で使用されます。

- The price was rounded to the nearest dollar.

to the nearest A は「概算…単位で」の意味で使われるイディオムです。
- They were so near and yet so far from resolving the issue.
(彼らは問題を解決するには, あと一歩及びませんでした)
so near and yet so far は「あと一歩及ばない」の意味で使われるイディオムです。
- The antique vase is priced at $2,000, or near offer.

- The cleaning is nearing completion.

動詞 near は「<段階・年齢・状態> に近づく」の意味で使われます。
他動詞用法
- We were nearing the end of our road trip when the car broke down.
(車が故障したとき, 私たちはロードトリップの終わりに近づいていました) - She’s nearing retirement and thinking about moving to a quieter town.
(彼女は退職に近づいており, より静かな町に引っ越すことを考えています)
2. <時間> に近づく
- It was nearing midnight.
(真夜中に近づいていました)
動詞 near は「<時間> に近づく」の意味で使われることがあります。
他動詞用法
- It was nearing dawn when we finally finished the project.
(プロジェクトをようやく終えたとき, 夜明けに近づいていました) - It was nearing noon, and the sun was high in the sky.
